Character Name: Sion Eltnam Atlasia
Age: ~20
Canon: Melty Blood
Canon Point: Melty Blood True Ending
Character Information: Wiki link
Personality:
Sion has borne an immense weight since birth. Though the Eltnam lineage was disgraced generations before her birth, the consequences were hers to shoulder nonetheless; living as a pariah, knowing the slightest infraction would be seized upon as reason to see her expelled from the institution that served as her home, Sion could never risk being anything less than perfect in the eyes of society. She carried this burden knowing that, even should she succeed, she would never be truly accepted; at most, she would be tolerated as she carried out her existence in isolation.
That is why, above all else, Sion exemplifies what it means to be an alchemist of the Atlas Institute: a cold, logical, meticulous machine before a person. It's a fact she takes great pride in; she knows, however much it rankles her peers and superiors alike, that she stands a step above others in both talent and skill. She expresses no shock when, in spite of her family's history, she is given the name Atlasia and chosen as the heir to Atlas' director; instead, she merely thinks this is the natural course of events when she is the most capable choice. Even after she becomes estranged from the organization, she continues to boast of its tenets and the superiority they grant her over others.
Despite this, her demeanor would be better described as aloof than arrogant. Cool and detached, Sion rarely smiles and even more rarely laughs, presenting a sharply serious face to the world around her. The alchemists of Atlas, after all, do not allow themselves to be swayed by the warping influence of emotion. Instead, Sion's mind is a constant sea of calculations, weighing the most advantageous outcome to any circumstance and the courses of action most likely to lead her to it. Analytical as she is, she always collects as much data as she can before acting, and weighs it with exacting care; she loathes taking action with an incomplete picture, and says often that an Atlas alchemist only acts when they know victory is assured.
Of course, that also means her actions often lack in the realms of morality and empathy, creating something of a ruthless edge to her personality. Though she recognizes that even other alchemists view the act as abhorrent, in order to collect the information she requires, Sion plunders the thoughts of others with invasive mind-reading tools, feeling no compunctions about utilizing the most efficient method of achieving her goals. She also begins her "negotiations" with Shiki by attaching that same tool to his nervous system and informing him that she will fry his brain from the inside if he doesn't agree to her terms—a choice she calmly declares is completely reasonable for putting her in the best negotiating position available to her.
Altogether, this leaves Sion quite the perfectionist. Never in her life has she had room for failure, either in the eyes of others or her own pride. A strict and fastidious person, her high standards don't apply only to her own self, either; when she sees others acting in error, she doesn't hold back in scolding them for their missteps. Whether that is chastising Shiki for acting recklessly, or Satsuki for failing to master her potential as a vampire, or Riesbyfe for pulling her punches in a fight against her, she expects the same of others that she expects from herself.
It's for this reason that Sion is also deeply self-conscious. Though she might not seem as such at a glance, the circumstances of Sion's life have given rise to a girl who is at once incredibly aware of how others perceive her and invested in maintaining the image of herself she has created. Her usual stoic manner cracks in the face of even the smallest criticism or correction; when Shiki—very mildly—tells her that her technical explanations are difficult for a layman to follow, she immediately snaps that there is nothing lacking in her explanations, and in fact, he's actually the one at fault for being so ignorant in the first place.
It's a tendency that reveals the complicated truth: for all Sion's cold logic and lack of smiles, she isn't the machine she might pretend to be. She isn't emotionless—merely repressed. She has spent her life suppressing any individual desire or opinion in order to become the perfect alchemist and ideal heir; what exists in their place is a blank space, holding only an abstract understanding of the values and morals the society around her holds. The void where her sense of self ought to be has only grown larger with time, filling Sion's heart with a self-doubt and yearning she struggles to understand.
She only comes to realize the origin of these feelings when she finds something she has been denied—and denied herself—her entire life: emotional connection with another person. Even then, she struggles; having spent her life socially isolated, she is almost unbearably awkward when it comes to such interactions. She stumbles over even simple gestures like handshakes, first finding herself too uneasy to take Shiki's hand and instead telling him it would be inappropriate for the Eltnam heir to touch a commoner so casually; later, when she wants to shake his hand before telling him goodbye indefinitely, she can't bring herself to vocalize that wish, instead fruitlessly hoping he'll catch on on his own.
Her lack of social experience also gives her an almost innocent lack of guile. Though not a poor strategist by any means, she is certainly ingenuous; it's pointed out a multitude of times, in both Shiki's narration and her own, that Sion is a poor liar—even when it comes to lying to herself. It's as though she almost can't help but to be earnest; the best she can do is lies of omission—and indeed, she only ever manages to conceal the truth from Shiki by presenting him with half of it.
Even that yearning emptiness, however, isn't the true Sion. Hidden within it, there is still the seed of a human heart—"a brave girl who does what she must," in the words of her short-lived companion Riesbyfe. More than her robotic logic, more than that aching absence, the drive that underpins all of Sion's actions is an unshakable determination. When her disgraced ancestor passes the curse of his vampirism to her, she resists for three years the impulse to consume human blood. When her efforts to find a cure for vampirism are stymied, she is willing to throw away her carefully cultivated life and violate one of Atlas' only taboos in order to move forward. Even when Zepia Eltnam Oberon is defeated, she stubbornly views the destruction of his remnants as a responsibility she must carry on her own. Resolute to her core, Sion will bear the weight of the world on her shoulders—even if it breaks her spine.
